Neighborhood notes for December 2014

There are many ways for residents to work toward better neighborhoods, and the City of Peoria is encouraging two actions: organization and engagement.

To be recognized as a neighborhood association by the City, organize thusly, according to Neighborhood Development Specialist Steve Fairbanks: Join with others dedicated to improving your area and pick a name, establish boundaries, choose officers (president, vice president, secretary and treasurer), and schedule regular meetings at a location open to the public.

For additional help, contact Fairbanks at (309) 494-8250; email sfairbanks@peoriagov.org.

The other way to have an impact is taking part in the City’s Neighborhood Watch program, a collaboration between residents, businesses and the Peoria Police Department.

“It is an effective tool to improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods,” Fairbanks said. “Neighborhood Watch encourages residents to meet their neighbors, which builds trust and confidence necessary to confront suspicious persons and to report nuisance, blight and crime.”

Interested citizens are invited to apply – applications are available online at www.peoriagov.org/peoria-police-department/neighborhood-programs/ – and recruit neighbors to help. After the application process is finished, Fairbanks will arrange for installation of Neighborhood Watch signs in the designated area and a Neighborhood Watch launch event with police, a City Council representative, and City staff.
