Trans fat ban; Koehler was right

Illinois Sen. Dave Koehler should feel exonerated. Labels like “nanny state” were hurled at him years ago for his efforts to ban trans fat. It took the FDA a while to catch up with the science, but on June 16 the government gave food manufacturers three years to phase out trans fat from processed foods. FDA has finally acknowledged trans fat is a major contributor to coronary heart disease and fatal heart attacks. Koehler’s support of a ban was also criticized because it was at the state level, and a ban of trans fat, the critics claimed, should come from the federal government. Oh come on, are we really going to quibble about who stands up and says no, we don’t feed toxins to children. Clare Howard
