Schoolchildren Without Basics

Lisa Travis, bottom, a teacher’s aide at Glen Oak School, and Terri Berg, top, a sign language interpreter at Richwoods High School, volunteer with the Round Table Project helping students with needs ranging from a clean pair of socks to deodorant and toothpaste. Here they are working at the main distribution hub at Richwoods High School where they also distribute canned and boxed foods.

Nearly 70 percent of the 13,265 students in Peoria Public Schools are low-income compared with nearly 50 percent statewide. Many of these low-income students don’t have the most basic personal care products. About 4 percent of all Peoria Public School children are homeless.

Go to the Round Table Facebook page at www.facebook.com/6099RoundTable/ to find what items are needed and drop-off locations. Three locations accepting donations through summer are:

  • AFT-IFT Building, 733 SW Washington St.
  • Peoria Public Schools Administration Building, 3202 N. Wisconsin Ave.
  • Roy Ricketts Building, 520 E. Lake Ave.

Needed items include girls and boys underwear, deodorant, laundry detergent, feminine hygiene products, toothpaste, tooth brushes, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, clothing, and children’s tennis shoes.
