Arts Alerts: BU Homecoming Concert at St. Mark’s, Jazz Society at Trailside; new shows at Players, Cornstock; Art Guild camp registration open, vintage hats at Historical Society

ART

• ArtsPartners of Central Illinois on Jan. 27 announced that Dr. Mae Gilliland Wright has accepted the position of Executive Director of the organization, following Jen Gordon and Suzette Boulais. Executive Director of Big Picture Initiative, the Peoria native also served on ArtsPartners’ Board for six years and previously worked at the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and Lakeview Museum. She teaches Digital Humanities at Bradley.

• An exhibit of vintage hats will run March through May at Peoria Historical Society’s John C. Flanagan House Museum, 942 NE Glen Oak Ave., Peoria. “Bonnets & Bowlers” features hats popular during the 19th and 20th centuries. The hats will be displayed in every room of Flanagan House, built in 1837.

CINEMA

• Michael B. Jordan returns as Adonis Creed in “Creed III,” in theaters March 3. A promising sequel in a “Rocky” lineage that’s had ups and downs, it co-stars Jonathan Majors as a former prodigy and new rival.

• Hollywood’s DC Extended Universe may be falling apart after the ascension of James Gunn and his reboot of the comic-book film series with cancelled movies, fired stars, etc. But “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” is still scheduled to open March 17, as Zachary Levi and Adam Brody return, joined by a supporting cast including Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Sinbad.

COMEDY

• Standup comic Bert Kreischer brings his Tops Off World Tour to the Civic Center Arena March 25.

MUSIC

• Bradley University is presenting its Chorale Homecoming Concert March 19 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church.

• Also March 19, the Central Illinois Jazz Society has scheduled David Hoffman (above) and Friends at Trailside Event Center.

• On the riverfront, the Contemporary Art Center is presenting the Lizzi Neal Band in its Preston Jackson Gallery on March 24.

STREAMING

• Idris Elba returns as clever but discredited detective John Luther in “Luther: The Fallen Sun” March 10 on Netflix, with Andy Serkis co-starring in the crime drama.

THEATER

• On March 10-12 and 16-19,
Peoria Players Theatre is staging Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony Award-winning “In The Heights” musical slice of life about New York City’s Upper Manhattan Washington Heights neighborbood.

• Corn Stock Theater will present “She Kills Monsters” March 10-12 and 17-19. Directed by Kevin Paul Wickart, it’s an odd but tender story about a woman grieving for her dead sister and recruiting a “Dungeons & Dragons” master to help unravel family secrets.

• Illinois Central College is presenting a five-day run March 29-31 and April 1-2 of the comedy “Five Women Wearing the Same Dress.” Veteran director Eddie Urish leads a student cast of Jaeda Bouchez, Megan Bresshan, Anny Lowe, Kayd Smith and Abbie Sparks..

TV

• The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the 95th Academy Awards at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre on March 12 on ABC-TV, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
