Arts Alerts: Cool music scene for cabin fever; nice playbill at area theaters

ART

  • The Peoria Riverfront Museum is exhibiting “FRESH: New Directions in Contemporary Art” featuring selections from Alice Walton’s Art Bridges Collection including current artists Rashid Johnson and Richard Prince, on display through September.

CINEMA

  • Opening Feb. 2, “Argylle” has a stellar cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Catherine O’Hara, Henry Cavill, Bryan Cranston, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson and John Cena in a story about a shy novelist who writes spy yarns, unexpectedly sucked into real-life espionage.
  • “Bob Marley: One Love” is a moving biopic about reggae pioneer Bob Marley. Starring Kingsley Ben-Adir in the title role, it premieres Feb. 14.

COMEDY

  • Sam Miller will perform at the Jukebox Comedy Club on Feb. 23-24.
  • A classic TV sitcom has been repackaged as a stage comedy, and “Golden Girls: The Laughs Continue” is slated for Feb. 29 at Peoria Civic Center

Cover band extraordinaire Revel in Red will catch Cabin Fever on Feb. 24 at Five Points Washington.

MUSIC

  • The Grammy Award-winning bluegrass trio Nickel Creek is playing the Peoria Civic Center Theater on Feb. 12.
  • The Peoria Symphony Orchestra will feature material by Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and others in a Romance program, with guest artist David Taylor, violin, Feb. 17 at the Peoria Civic Center Theater.
  • “Cabin Fever,” with Revel in Red, will be Feb. 24 at Five Points Washington.

STREAMING

  • “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” is a spy comedy based on the 2005 film, now starring Maya Erskine and Donald Glover, with John Turturo and Paul Dano. The eight-episode series starts on Feb. 2 on Prime.
  • “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is a live-action remake of the 2005-08 animated show. Scheduled to debut on Netflix on Feb. 22, the eight episode series stars Gordon Cormier as Aang.

TELEVISION

  • The 66th Grammy Awards will be telecast Feb. 4 on CBS, hosted by Trevor Noah.
  • Super Bowl LVIII will air on CBS on Feb. 11.
  • The People’s Choice Awards program is set for NBC on Feb. 18.
  • A remake of “Shogun” is scheduled to be telecast Feb. 27 on FX and Hulu.

THEATER

  • “Something Rotten,” directed by Steve Bortolotti, will be presented Feb. 2-4 and 8-11 at Peoria Players Theatre.
  • Corn Stock Theatre is staging “Significant Other,” directed by Joel Shoemaker, Feb. 9-11 and 16-18.
  • Based on the 2004 film, the musical “Mean Girls,” with a book by Tina Fey, music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin, is set for the Peoria Civic Center Theater on Feb. 21-22.
  • ICC’s Theatre Department is presenting the all-female comedy “Women Playing ‘Hamlet’,” about a woman cast as Shakespeare’s Prince of Denmark and realizing her nemesis is none other than Sir Patrick Stewart. Feb. 28-29 and March 2-3 at ICC’s Performing Arts Center.
