Library cards are available to all who want one

As wonderful as libraries are, it’s no wonder that more than 92 percent of Illinoisans live in a library service area.

If, however, you are among the 1 million Illinois residents who do not have a local library, then you can purchase a non-resident library card from your closest public library.

The annual cost of a non-resident library card varies by taxing district.

At Peoria Public Library, it is $144 for year-long access to all our resources — physical and digital. With a library card, you then have the ability to borrow items from other area libraries or via inter-library loan.

Here are some exceptions to having to purchase a non-resident Peoria Public Library card:

Any student who attends a Peoria public or parochial school, even if they live outside Peoria, is eligible for a Peoria Public Library card, valid Aug. 15 through Aug. 14 of the next year.
Qualifying disabled veterans and their surviving spouses.
Qualifying Peoria-area teachers may receive a limited-use card for school purposes only.

I thought I was correct in that students of both public and private schools were eligible to receive library cards. They were able to ask for them at their school. That information may not have been given to new employees along the way.
