A Kwanzaa Celebration will be held Thursday, December 28th at 4pm at the George Washington Carver Center.
There will be storytelling, music, dance, activities for kids, food samples, and the lighting of the Kwanzaa candles. The event is free. Kwanzaa is a seven day African American holiday, created in 1966 by Dr. Maluana Karenga. It starts the day after Christmas and last to News Year’s day.
Each day carries a specific theme:
Umoja–Unity
Kujichagulia- Self Determination
Ujima- Collective Work and Responsibility (This is theme for Thursday)
Ujamaa- Cooperative Economics
Nia- Purpose
Kuumba- Creativity
Imani- Faith
This year’s Kwanzaa celebration is sponsored by WPNV 106.3FM, the Summer Drummers, with contributions from various residents. For more information, you may contact Garry Moore at 264-5763. Media covering the event should have plenty of interview options.
