West Peoria News for August 2012

Peoria POPS Orchestra’s Swing Band will present the season’s final Concert In the Park on Sunday, August 12th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Franciscan Recreation Complex. The West Peoria Residents’ Association and the Peoria Park District invite you to grab your lawn chairs, pack a picnic basket, for an afternoon of  Swing as only the POPS can swing.

SideTracked managed to side track a number of West Peorians who attended their concert on the very hot afternoon of July 15th with their very lively and spirited concert. They made us forget the hot, humid weather while enjoying them.

The 4th of July flag-raising was led by Cub Scout Alex DeSutter and Boy Scouts Daniel Kerns and Davette Baker. Recently retired City Administrator, John Carlson, was honored as Grand Marshal for his outstanding efforts while in the employ of West Peoria.

Boy Scout Troop 11 Ice Cream Social will be held on August. 16th at the West Peoria Fire Station from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Troop 11 Boy Scouts started selling tickets on July 30th. Walk-ins that evening are welcome. When a Scout visits your residence, purchase the ticket as this is the biggest fund raiser for the scouts each year.

Just a reminder for the second Calvin Coolidge Mothers Club Reunion. It will be held at Sky Harbor, Monday, August 27th at 5:30 p.m. Please pass this information to any past Mothers Club members that might not read it here. R.S.V.P. by August 15th. The West Peoria Neighborhood Watch will meet August 8th. at 6:30 p.m. at West Peoria City Hall. Plans will be discussed for the West Peoria Night Out Against Crime. Activities will include a Bicycle Rodeo and a bicycle drawing, a demonstration by the Peoria County Sheriff’s Canine Division and display of the “bearcat,” West Peoria Fire Department equipment, music by The Eclectic Living Room Band, Boy Scout Troop #11, gate prizes, hot dogs , sno-cones and much, much more. Mark  Saturday, September 8th from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. on  your calendar for the West Peoria Night Out Against Crime.

Nancy Blackwell from the Genealogy Society will be guest speaker at the West Peoria Residents’ Association meeting on Thursday, August 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the West Peoria City Hall. Ms Blackwell will give a presentation on the history of the Society and what’s new in genealogy research. The public is welcome. Plan to attend and bring a friend.

Thank you Haddad’s customers for donating to the West Peoria Lions Club Camp Lions Card Drive, also to Mark and his Haddad’s employee’s, you did an awesome job when you donated $232.00. The July 4th 50-50 collected $560; the winner was John Becker from Best Buds who won $280. Donations from West Peoria businesses John Deal, Joe’s Barber Shop, South Side Bank, and the West Peoria Residents Association also collected another $550. It costs $550.00 to send a hearing or visually impaired child to camp for a week. With donations this year the West Peoria Lions Club was able to send two children to camp. Our local Lions extend a very big thank you to all who have helped send these kids to camp. Next year let’s try for three. The WPLC elected their 2012/2013 officers: President: Ann Masters, Vice President: Maggie Moore, Secretary: Jim McCarter, and Treasurer: Terry Masters.

The West Peoria Beautiful Awards will again be sponsored by the West Peoria Beautification Committee and are presented for the improvement of an individual residential West Peoria property. Residents are encouraged to start checking around their neighborhoods for nominees. Nomination forms can be picked up at City Hall and must be submitted to City Hall by August 31st. Awards will be presented at the September 20th West Peoria Residents Association meeting. Questions may be directed to Maggie Moore, 673-0535.

Did you see the biggest book in West Peoria at the 4th of July parade? The West Peoria Library showed off their new parade float this year and passed out 2400 bookmarks to spectators. What a great turnout!  Reading has been hot, hot, hot at the library this summer! The Summer Reading Olympics kicked off June 12th with 40 local kids participating. That’s almost 200 hours of reading this summer! Amazing! The kids were rewarded with books and coupons donated by local businesses for all of their hard work. A HUGE thank you to all of the participants and families that supported their library this summer by reading. As always, the library is looking for volunteers for fall and winter hours. If you or any of your neighbors are interested, please contact Emily Huff at 453-8139 or inquire at the library. With great hopes the library will grow this fall and we will be accepting donations once again.

The West Peoria Food Pantry continues to accept donations of non-perishable items. Cereal, noodles, rice and canned veggies are some examples of what is shared with clients. Donations can be brought to the library.  The food pantry is open to any West Peoria resident, with proof of residency, whenever the library is open. The library and food pantry are open Tuesdays from 10:00-4:00, Thursdays from 10:00-12:00 and 2:00-4:00, Fridays from 10:00-12:00, and the first two Saturdays of the month from 10:00-1:00.  These hours are effective until August 17th., when fall hours will take effect. There is always a calendar posted on the rear doors of the church located at the corner of Kellogg and Cedar Aves. When in doubt – check it out!  The West Peoria Library has given out almost 100 free library cards since September 2011; have you gotten yours?

All residents are required to sign up for garbage service with Waste Management – 1-800-796-9696. You will be charged for this service. Landscape Waste Pick Up is included.  Residents are responsible for maintaining a clean area from the middle of the street to the middle of the alley. This includes mowing the alley line and behind fences or garages and picking up any trash or debris in the alley. Grass and weeds must be kept mowed and are in violation if they grow over 9″ high. The area between the curb and sidewalk must be mowed as well.

No Open Burning of trash or landscape waste is permitted. To report a violation of this policy, please call: Peoria County Sheriff at: 672-6011. Inoperable Vehicles – All vehicles without an up-to-date license sticker are considered inoperable and are in violation of City Code.  Any vehicle without said sticker must be stored in a garage. A vehicle parked on the grass is in violation of City Code.

Please do not blow grass clippings into the street as it causes the storm sewers to back up. This violates City Code 3-8-1 (Right Of Way Obstructions).

Permits are required for new or replacement fences, new or replacement sidewalks or driveways or patios, new or replacement decks/porches, sheds, garages, additions, structure demolition, swimming pools and home occupation. Most permits are $15.00 to $25.00. Please call City Hall to determine if a permit is needed.
