West Peoria News for June 2013

The 16th Annual West Peoria Jamboree Run will start at 7:00 am, June 1st and features a 4K run, 1K walk, and a Children’s Fun Run. Applications were included in the residents newsletter sent to all homes and are also available at City Hall. Continuing the tradition of the first Saturday in June, you are invited to attend the Cub Scout Carnival at 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Enjoy the Carnival, bring your kids, friends or neighbors or come over later for the Jamboree. West Peoria organizations will have food and drinks available. The band Beautiful Disaster will perform from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. Come, enjoy and connect with neighbors and friends. All this happens at the Franciscan Recreation Park.

Neighborhood Watch will meet Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall and features Jay Sauer from the Illinois State Crime Stoppers speaking about the organization. On Thursday, June 20, 2013 – David Pittman, will bring us up to date on Rocky Glen’s current status at the Residents Meeting. This meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

Are you a baseball fan, a Moss Ave. Sale fan? You can combine and enjoy some time with the two on June 8th right here in our own neighborhood. Courtyard Estates invites you to a pre-game bash with the Peoria Chiefs from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at their facility at 117 N. Western Ave. There is a meet the players where you can get autographs, take photos, enjoy ball park hot dogs, popcorn and have a very pleasant time right here at home. Courtyard Estates hosts events where they include our community, families, and friends. Take the opportunity and have a very enjoyable afternoon. Call for further information at 674-2400.

West Peoria Lions Club, Troop and Pack 11 and the West Peoria community invite you to join the annual 4th of July Parade and Flag Raising celebration. They will be honored if you and/or your organization wish to participate and join them on this special day and bask in the feeling of community togetherness. Trophies will be awarded for the following: most patriotic, best of show, service organizations, best juvenile and grand marshal. All entries need to be decorated in a patriotic theme. The 44th annual parade steps off at 10:00 a.m. on the morning of the 4th. Line up begins at 8:30 a.m. on Rohmann Ave. Groups should be in place and ready to step-off no later that 9:45 a.m. City streets will be blocked at that time in preparation for the start of the parade. Come join the West Peoria Library Summer Reading Program at the Franciscan Recreation Center this summer. This year’s program will begin June 18th and runs through August 6th. The Library is offering a drop-in reading program every Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m., where kids ages 1-13 will be able to check out books, do make and take activities and track their successes with prizes. This year’s theme is Have Book, Will Travel! West Peoria Library is working through the Peoria Park District this summer, and registration is required for this free program. Planning has started for the third Calvin Coolidge Mothers Club Reunion. It will again be at Sky Harbor on Monday, August 26th at 5:30 p.m. More information will be in the next issues of the Residents’ Association newsletter and Community Word. All vehicles without an up-to-date license sticker are considered inoperable and are in violation of City Code. Any vehicle without an up-to-date sticker must be stored in a garage.

The township reports that 33 local students plus 4 teachers attended this spring’s government day. There were 16 students from Calvin Coolidge, 4from St. Mark’s, 7 from Notre Dame and 6 students from Manual.

Clean-up Day continues to be a success with 173 loads of junk collected. The city crew had two truck loads; 21 pallets of electronics, 20 tires @ $3.00/ea. (10 more found in alleys). In total, six dumpsters were filled. This effort each April, helps our community become a better place to live. The township thanks all the volunteers who helped with clean-up day. This is another event that proves that the living is best to the west of Peoria.

Waste Management is the trash pickup provider for the City of West Peoria. Residents are responsible for establishing an account with them. Please call them at 1-800-796-9696 to set up your account. You will be billed for this service. Landscape waste pickup began on Friday, April 5th and will continue until Friday, December 27th. This service is included in your Waste Management bill. Garage sales are permitted once each quarter for no more than three days. Please check with City Hall to ensure there will be no road work going on that would interfere with your sale. It is against City Code to rake or blow leaves or grass clippings into the street. When it rains this causes the storm sewers to back up.

There are still funds available for the Residential Paint Reimbursement Program. This program offers reimbursement of paint costs to residents who wish to paint the exterior of their homes or accessory structures. (sheds, storage units, or garages). Reimbursement will be granted for exterior paint only. Participants who purchase paint in the City of West Peoria will receive reimbursement of 50 percent of total paint costs, up to a maximum of $250. If the paint is not purchased in West Peoria, the maximum amount reimbursed will be 30 percent of total paint costs, up to $250.
