Peoria Park District May Activities

CIVIL WAR SPRING DRILL APRIL 30-MAY 1 @ SOMMER PARK – The Peoria Park District’s Sommer Park will host a Civil War Spring Drill on April 30, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., & on May 1st, 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, and Sommer Park’s Spring Drill and Winter Quarters (coming in November) are among several 2011 events planned by local volunteers to commemorate this historic anniversary. The Civil War Spring Drill is open to the public. Admission $2 per person or $10 per car. For more info call 691-8423.

ADULT CO-REC KICKBALL – The Peoria Park District will offer a Kickball League starting May 1 @ Peoria Stadium. Co-rec teams of 10-15 players (with at least four female players) will attempt to outrun their opponent with a little friendly and enjoyable competition. Team Fees are $75 for resident teams/$80 for non-resident teams. Player Fee is $10 for residents/$15 for non-residents. PIANO CLASSES OFFERED – A number of piano classes  are offered this spring for kids &adults of all ages beginning May 3. These four-week classes are appropriate for anyone looking for a shortened intro to piano or for a brush-up on skills.

There are beginner and intermediate sessions for children ages 5-13, and adults ages 14 and up, plus special sessions for homeschooled children. All classes are taught at Don’s Music Land. 2-PLAYER SCRAMBLE MATCH PLAY GOLF TOURNAMENT – Get your partner for the Peoria Park District’s 2-Player Scramble Match Play qualifying event held at Newman Golf Course on Saturday, May 7. Entry deadline is Sunday, May 1st. Cost is $35/team, plus green fees. Entry forms are available  at www.peoriaparks.org/golf and at all PPD courses. For more info call 689-3329.

MOTHER’S DAY at PEORIA ZOO – Visit with our Zoo mothers this Mother’s Day, May 8, as we offer all moms FREE admission to Peoria Zoo with a paid admission for accompanying children. Call for info at 681-3513.

LUTHY BOTANICAL GARDEN PRESENTS ANNUAL PEORIA ORCHID SOCIETY SHOW ON MOTHER’S DAY – The Luthy Botanical Garden will host their annual Orchid Show, hosted by the Peoria Orchid Society, on Sunday, May 8 (Mother’s Day), from noon to 5:00 p.m. Bring your favorite mom, sister, aunt, grandmother or friend to this year’s Orchid Show. Admission $2 for adults age 13 and over, but mothers, grandmothers will be admitted FREE. Children 12 and under and Garden members are also free. Call 686-3362 for info.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE TOURNAMENT – Join in the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on Sunday, May 8 starting at 9:00 a.m. at Detweiller Park. This fast-paced team sport is played with seven on the field, but you may have up to 14 on your team. We will play a mixed format with five men and two women on the field at all times. Players must be in high school or older.

AUDITIONS FOR “JOSEPH AND THEAMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT” – The Community Children’s Theatre will hold auditions for their summer musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” on May 13 at 5:00 p.m. and on May 14 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Thomas School’s new gym, for ages 8-18. Those auditioning should prepare a song to sing, bring sheet music for the accompanist, and wear comfortable clothing for dance. Performance dates are July 7-10. For more info call 681-2841.

SKATEBOARDING

CLINIC OFFERED

Skateboarding Clinics will be at Bicycle Safety Town. This new program is open to all ages with an interest in skateboarding. Participants will learn the basics and a couple of tricks with instructor Jacob Heflin from Airwaves Skate Works in Peoria. Choose from one of our four-week clinics. The first clinic will start Thursday, May 12, with other clinics starting May 14, June 23 or 25, and August 4 or 6.Fees for the one-day class are $20 for residents and $25 for non-residents. Fees for the two-day class are $35 for residents and $40 for non-residents. Register at Glen Oak Pavilion or online at www.peoriaparks.org.

LIL’ REV IN CONCERT at  FOREST PARK NATURE CENTER – This award-winning multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and music historian, on May 14, @ 7:00 p.m., as part of their 2011 concert series. Payment for reserved seating is available at the Trailhead Nature Store, and general admission seating is payable at the door. Concert fees are $6 for adults $5 for children, and CORE members receive a $1 discount. For more information, call the Nature Center, 686-3360.

ZOOFEST – Kick off summer right by joining the Peoria Zoo in their annual ZOOFEST celebration Saturday, May 28 from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Join us at 1:00 p.m. as we move the Chinese Alligator to her summer exhibit (weather permitting). We’ll have bouncy rides, games, animal encounters and more!
